Julie Burke, PhD is a patent scientist who handles prosecution, primarily in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical areas. She has worked with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as a Fellow at Hopkins, and for Angenics, Inc. and Biogen Research Corporation. She has an extensive history with academic and industry research, and was awarded a grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation while at Hopkins to study the biogenesis of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. Her research has included in vitro translation and biochemical analysis of the CFTR, baculoviral expression of the CFTR, characterization of antibodies, experiments to express a variety of mammalian proteins in recombinant and transformed cells, the creation of monoclonal antibody producing cell lines, and the development of diagnostic immunoassays at Hopkins, Biogen, and Angenics.

Before moving to her current position with the Knobbe Martens Intellectual Property Law Firm, she spent 15 years with the USPTO, where she examined patent applications in the cancer immunology and recombinant antibody arts, oversaw special laws applications, drafted petition decisions, and evaluated patent examination practices for quality improvement. Her talk at Hopkins focused on her education at Hopkins and Imperial College, her experience working as a patent officer and patent lawyer, and the relationship between biochemical industry and patent law today.
